Water
MANY
PEOPLE don’t realize it, but often, what we interpret as hunger really isn’t hunger at
all—it’s thirst!
And one of the most-effective, most-powerful
appetite suppressants—even when we ARE truly hungry—is pure, fresh water. Of all the appetite suppressants
mentioned here, this one has an advantage far and above all the others: It’s either free or really cheap!
(Unless, of course, you are paying for bottled water.)
Here are some tips on using water to suppress
appetite:
-
About half an hour prior to each
meal, drink an 8-ounce glass of water. (And by the way, many people don’t realize
that most drinking glasses contain far more than 8 ounces. Many standard table glasses are 16 to
20 ounces. For 8 ounces, think the “small” glass of orange juice they serve at
restaurants.)
-
Between
meals, any time you begin feeling hungry, try drinking a glass of water first. Then
wait 10 or 20 minutes, and you’ll often find the hunger has disappeared or greatly
decreased.
-
For more
calorie-burning power, drink really cold water—ice cold, if it’s available. Your body
will burn more calories in warming the water to body temperature. It's been mathematically shown that
if you were to drink about eight 8-ounce glasses per day of ice cold water, you'd burn an extra 60
calories per day. The result? An extra pound lost every two months—or six pounds per year, just from
this one small change in your daily intake.
-
To really
maximize the appetite-suppressing power of water, take it with the powder or capsule
form of a fiber such as psyllium or glucomannan (see these under the Glucomannan menu tab).
-
Keep water nearby as you work and sip it throughout the day. If
you don’t like spending money on a lot of bottled water, buy just two or three, then refill them
from the tap and refrigerate them. Keep one on your desk or at your workplace. You can keep the
bottles clean by running them through your dishwasher at low- to
moderate-heat.
-
Consider purchasing
and using a water filter to keep in your fridge or at your workplace. Water pitcher-dispensers can
provide you with the purest, freshest water available.
-
Other liquids with high water
content include soups and vegetable broth (see the
Foods menu tab), green tea, and green
smoothies (see those menu items, as well). But plain fresh water is hard to beat when it comes to
suppressing appetite.
